What is the Youth Leader Programme?
The Youth Leader programme was set up to introduce young people, aged between 15 and 21, to volunteering in their hockey club. The aim of the programme is to enjoy all aspects of the sport of hockey rather than concentrating on playing only. To do this, the programme focuses on 3 main areas which are umpiring, coaching and team management. The Youth Leader programme helps to pass on skills, top tips and most importantly confidence so that Youth Leaders can get back out to their clubs in order to put their new found knowledge to use!

How does it work?
Each Youth Leader starts the programme by coming to a 4 hour Introductory Workshop which covers coaching, umpiring and team management. In order to come onto the Youth Leader Programme, each Youth Leader must attend and complete the Introductory Workshop. Once the Youth Leaders have attended the workshop, they head back to their clubs where they are required to complete 5 hours of contact time.

How do the logged sessions work?
At the introductory workshop, each Youth Leader is given a Youth Leader Workbook. The workbook holds a number of blank sessions that the Youth Leader must complete. This is done by completing 5 hours of sessions within the club. The five hours can be made up of coaching, umpiring, team management or a combination of all three! Once the sessions are completed, each Youth Leader must get their workbook signed off by a club representative. When that is done, the club lets the IHA know and we release the certificates at the end of each season. It is up to the clubs to then present the certificates to their Youth Leaders.

What can my club do to help our Youth Leaders?
The IHA gives responsibility to each club to make sure that they give their Youth Leaders meaningful and enjoyable responsibilities. And also to make sure that each Youth Leader is helping out in an area that interests them! In order to help do this, each Youth Leader completes a Self-Evaluation form at the workshop. We then ask the Youth Leaders to show this to their club so that the club clearly understands what the Youth Leader would like to get out of their time on the programme.

Brendon Carolan is a High Performance FIH Qualified coach, and was awarded South African Coach of the year for 2009. Last season he led our Men’s 1sts to the KO16′s of the EHL, and remains coach to the Men’s 1sts again for the coming season. Brendon will provide technical coaching to both Ladies 1sts and 2nd squads this season.

For the Ladies 2nd team, we are also delighted to report that Michael O’Connor will be continuing in his role as coach. His previous coaching experience included a successful two-year spell at Genesis, where his team secured promotion to division 3, and finished a credible 4th in their first year following promotion. Mick also has experience coaching abroad, with stints in both the USA and Perth in the last number of years. His own playing career is impressive, and as a stalwart of the Pembroke men’s first team, has enjoyed continued success, winning 3 Irish Hockey League Championships and numerous other trophies. Most recently Mick was selected to play with the Leinster senior team in the 2011 Interprovencial competition, and has also played in the semi-professional league in Perth, Australia in 2010. Mick will be continuing in his role as Ladies II’s coach for the 2011 / 2012 season, where he plans to build on the foundations established last season, and develop and integrate the emerging talented fillies players into the 1st and 2nds squads.

We are confident that the continuity established by retaining and extending the coaching structures will allow us advance the good work done last season with both teams.

1. The IHA is holding a Level 1 Refresher. The course is designed for anyone who:
· Has attended an IHA Level 1 coaching course at least 5 years ago or more
· Is either still actively coaching or wishes to get back involved again
· Would like to update themselves on key technical changes as well as gaining an understanding of the key concept of ‘Play-Practice-Play’
· Wishes to refresh themselves on the Level 1
The course is being run in UCD on May 15th (10.15am to 4pm) and the cost is €30. Payment and registration is needed in advance.

2. The IHA is running a Code of Ethics courses in May. If you are working or volunteering with U18 players, it is essential that you attend this course. The course is being run on May 11th in UCD between 7pm and 10pm. The cost of attending is €20.

This course is designed to be an introduction to hockey coaching for teachers and/or trainee teachers who have a limited knowledge of the sport of hockey. It is designed to look specifically at the coaching needs of those with a background in education and assumes that attendees have training and experience in terms of dealing with children. As such, the course focuses on the technical aspects of the sport. Full details and a registration form are available on the coaching section of the IHA Development Centre.

Participants must be 16 years or older to take part in both courses. The majority of the Introductory Coaching Course is spent on the pitch and that participants will be active throughout. Ensure that you let the IHA know of any reason that you may not be able to fully participate so that we can cater for you. Places are limited and will be filled on a first come, first served basis and will only be confirmed upon payment.

Each course is 90 minutes in length with 2 courses run per night. Stepping Stones are open to coaches of all levels and qualifications. All of the courses listed above are appropriate to coaches up to Level 2. Course information is below. Introduction to Tactics
This course introduces keys areas of tactical play in hockey and how these can be developed at club and school level. The primary areas of focus will be pressing, outletting and counter attacking. These areas will be presented in both a practical and theoretical context. Extensive video footage will be used to demonstrate the use of tactics in game play. Essentially, this course will provide top tips as to how a tactical approach can be introduced to club or school players.

Movement off the Ball
This workshop covers an area which is too often lacking in players and teams at club and school level. The fundamental concepts of movement are explained and how movement can be combined to have effective unit and team strategies. As this is an ‘off the ball’ skill it can easily and quickly be of benefit to any team. The workshop demonstrates strategies for introducing it to young players including video footage.

Developing Vertical Hockey
Paul Revington will introduce his approach to developing fast and direct hockey. The area covers moving with the ball, passing and receiving techniques for dynamic forward play. Video footage is a key component of this course with team play from all over the world examined. This course was also delivered at Hooked 2010.

Individual Circle Defence and Defending the Baseline
With the introduction of the autopass, individual defence has become an increasingly important area to cover. Key components of 1 v 1 defence will be introduced during the course and how that can be extending to determine unit understanding and defending the baseline and circle areas of the pitch. This course was also delivered at Hooked 2010.

Description: The courses are split into groups according to age and ability. Each of the groups covers all aspects of the sport from basic handling skills to game play situations and set plays.

Course Overview: Each course focuses on player development from relative beginners to intermediates and beyond. We incorporate core skills and key elements that will assist players to the next level, whether it being for school, club, provincial, or even international teams. And other specialist hockey *drills for dragflicking, throwing aerials passes, 3D skills and goalkeepering specific drills are also planned and prepared for the sessions.*

Aim: To bring a different hockey coaching style, playing methods and understanding to the players or involved for the entire week.

Brief Description of Coaches / Who we are:
Brendon Carolan, is a High Performance FIH Qualified coach, and was awarded South African Coach of the year for 2009. He is currently the Men’s Head Coach of the Province of KwaZulu Natal in Durban, South Africa, who was the Provincial winners in 2009 and 2010. He has also been Head Coach for South Africa U17, U18 and U19A Teams from 2008 to date, and was recently appointed as the Pembroke Wanderers Men’s 1st team coach.

Gowan Jones, has a South African Level 1 Coaching certificate, and has coached provincial age group teams in Kwazulu-Natal over the past 2 years, and has represented the South African U18 and U21 sides, and recently been at the South African Men’s camp for the FIH World Cup.

Jethro Eustice, has also a South African Level 1 Coaching certificate, and has been coaching school and provincial age group teams in Kwazulu-Natal Midlands over the past year. He has represented South African in the youth age groups, and recently attended the South African U21 Camp.

Brendon Panther has a South African Level 1 Coaching certificate. He has represented South Africa at the Junior World Cup, and recently been at the South African Men’s Camp for the Commonwealth Games 2010.

Justin played professionally for Dragons in Belgium for 3 years where he also moved into coaching, there he was responsible for the Men’s 2nds and took charge of the Colts and Fillies section. In addition to coaching our Ladies 1sts he is current Head Coach to the Leinster Ladies U18.

Justin will be assisted by Alec Barrett, Alec is an established member of Monkstown’s Men’s 1st XI where he has played IHL and qualified for two Irish Senior Cup Finals. Alec has coached in Trinity and Railway Union where he led their Ladies 2nd to the Div 2 title in 2009.

Stepping Stones courses provide continuous development to Irish hockey coaches and aim to bridge the gap between the different levels on the coaching pathway.

Coaching the Autopass
In this workshop the experience gained from playing four senior international tournaments under the new rules will be brought in the form of match video and training methodologies.  The session will cover rule clarification, techniques, set pieces and training drills. This course is applicable to all coaching levels.

Coaching Overload
The workshop looks at those key situations that form the basis of hockey decision making including 2 v 1 and building into 3 v 2 and beyond.  These will be dealt with from a technical skill perspective, decision making and tactical perspective with practical examples using video and easy to use drills.  There will be a focus on both the attacking and defensive aspects. This course is applicable to all coaching levels.

Introduction to Hockey Coaching – Volunteers

This course is designed to be an introduction to hockey coaching for volunteers and parents. IHA Level 1 Coaching Award

The level 1 award is designed for people looking to head group session. The course prepares people to plan deliver and evaluate sessions and is aimed at people looking to lead sessions within a club or school environment focusing on the way skills are developed within younger players.

Candidates MUST have attended an introductory award before attending a level 1 award with the exception of those excused by the exemption below. It is strongly recommended however that all candidates undertake an introductory award before taking part in a level one course.

In order to come onto the Level 1 Coaching Course, candidates must 18 years old by the last date of the course AND must meet one of the following criteria:

• Have completed an Introductory Coaching Course OR
• Have been registered as an playing club member since the 2006-07 season OR
• Be able to provide evidence of coaching within a senior club environment within the last 2 years

The course is 3 days in duration and includes a Code of Ethics/Child Protection Course. The course prepares coaches for planning and delivering sessions that develop technical and tactical understanding of hockey.

The course covers the following themes:

• Core Skills
• The principles and rules of hockey
• Skill development
• Use of small sided games
• Warm up and cool down
• The role of the coach
• Reflective practise

IHA Level 2 Coaching Award

The level 2 award is designed for people coaching teams or wishing to advance their coaching skills and knowledge. The course prepares coaches to develop skills over a series of session through the development of game based practisesThe course is aimed at people who are coaching club and school teams and includes a higher level of technical development than the level 1 course as well as the introduction of core tactics.

Candidates MUST have completed the IHA level 1 award or show evidence of completing a similar award in another country.

The course is 4 days in duration and attendance at the whole course is essential. There will also be an assessment day within 4 months of the course which is also obligatory.

The course reinforces the themes in level 1 as well as introducing the following themes:

• Further skill development
• Principles of attack and defence
• Player/squad interaction
• Introduction to physical development of players

IHA Level 3 Coaching Award

The level 3 award is aimed at coaches that wish to coach to a higher level within a team environment. Candidates MUST have completed the IHA level 2 award or show evidence of completing a similar award in another country.

The course is only suitable for those who are coaching at a high level.

The course will include 7 contact days over the course of a year plus an assessment day.

The course reinforces and develops the principles established in previous IHA courses as well as introducing the following topics.

• Teaching and presentation styles
• Psychology
• Match Analysis
• Video Analysis
• Conditioning and periodisation
• Planning
• Reflective practise

The auto pass is a mandatory experimental rule for 2009 ~ this means in effect that it comes into use for all teams from the start of next season.

Rule Interpretation & Guidence with FIH Clarification

In the 2009 rulebook, the free hit rule has been re-worded. It now incorporates two variations on the old rule: the option to ‘auto’ or ‘self’ pass and the restriction when hitting the ball directly into the circle from the attacking 23 metre area.

Outlined below is the actual wording issued by FIH. Under each part of the rule, there is a guide to umpires and a brief commentary to provide some clarity. Please feel free to contact me (027 2211 492) if there are any aspects that require further explanation.

Note: In all cases below, when the term ‘free hit’ is used, the rule will also apply to side-line hit ins and long corners inside the attacking 23 metre area. Note also that the ‘auto pass’ can be used to start the game, or to re-start after a goal has been scored.

13.1 Location of a free hit:

a) a free hit is taken close to where the offence occurred.
‘Close to’ means within playing distance of where the offence occurred and with no significant advantage gained. The location from which a free hit is taken must be more precise inside the 23 metre area.

Commentary and guidelines: Around the field, the placement of the free hit has become more liberal. In particular when a team takes a free hit back from where the infringement occurred, a 10 – 20 metre tolerance may be appropriate. Clearly when the ball is taken ahead of the spot, then maybe a 5 metre tolerance is acceptable. Inside the attacking 23 metre area, free hits (and auto passes) need to be managed more closely.

b) a free hit awarded within 5 metres of the circle to the attack is taken at the nearest point 5 metres from the circle

Commentary and guidelines: Most turfs have the dotted line marked 5 metres from the circle edge. No attacking free hit (or auto pass) is allowed within this line and the circle edge. Instead, the ball needs to be taken directly back and outside the dotted 5 m line.

c) a free hit awarded outside the circle to the defence within 15 metres of the back-line is taken up to 15 metres from the back-line in line with the location of the offence, parallel to the side-line.

Commentary and guidelines: Using old terminology – “Take it up to the 16”

d) a free hit awarded inside the circle to the defence is taken anywhere inside the circle or up to 15 metres from the back-line in line with the location of the offence, parallel to the side-line.

Commentary and guidelines: If a free hit is awarded inside the circle, it can be taken anywhere from inside the circle (or straight up to “the 16”).

13.2 Procedures for taking a free hit, centre pass and putting the ball back into play after it has been outside the field:

a) the ball must be stationary

Commentary and guidelines: In many cases the ball will not be stationary. However, it needs to be made clear that the free hit (or auto pass) has been taken.

b) opponents must be at least 5 metres from the ball
If an opponent is within 5 metres of the ball, they must not interfere with the taking of the free hit or must not play or attempt to play the ball. If this player is not playing the ball, attempting to play the ball or influencing play, the free hit need not be delayed.

Commentary and guidelines: Allow play to carry on in the spirit of open, flowing hockey. Deal with players who interfere deliberately under misconduct. However, if a player chooses to ‘auto pass’ then they should not be permitted to try and manufacture a foul by running at the opposition who may not have finished retreating 5 metres. The ‘auto pass’ rule is intended to speed up the taking of free hits – not to create an opportunity for a manufactured foul.

c) when a free hit is awarded to the attack within the 23 metres area, all players other than the player taking the free hit must be at least 5 metres from the ball

d) the ball is moved using a push or hit

e) the ball must not be raised intentionally directly from the free hit

f) if the player taking the free hit is the next player to play the ball, the actions of taking the free hit and of next playing the ball must be two separate actions

Commentary and guidelines: This rule describes the ‘auto pass.’ It means that the auto pass needs to show clearly that the free hit (to ones self) has been taken. Therefore a player should attempt to make the ball stationary and pass to himself or herself, before say dribbling down the field with the ball. The temptation might be for players to carry on when the whistle goes without formally auto passing. This rule requires them to make the auto pass and their next action, two separate events.

g) before another player of the team which took the free hit is allowed to play the ball, the ball must move at least 1 metre
The ball does not have to move 1 metre before the player taking the free hit may play the ball again.

Commentary and guidelines: The movement of the ball one metre to a player of the same team (conventional pass) is now an established rule. However, it too has been liberalised. The movement of the ball one meter at a free hit allows for opposition players to compete for the ball more safely when contesting the ball at an overhead pass situation. However, note that when a player does an ‘auto pass,’ then the ball does not need to move one metre.

h) from a free hit awarded to the attack within the 23 metres area, the ball must not be played into the circle until it has traveled at least 5 metres or has been touched by a player of either team other than the player taking the free hit.

Commentary and guidelines: Under no circumstances may a player play the ball directly into the circle from a free hit (or auto pass) within the attacking 23 metre area. The ball must first have traveled (moved) 5 metres (conventional or auto pass) or be touched by another player of either team.
