Pembroke Wanderers 2 (Maurice Elliott, Alan Sothern) Annadale 4 (Peter Caruth 2, Andy Williamson, Neil Hamilton)

This was a match watched by a large crowd, on a lovely early Winter Afternoon.
The teams, separated by only 2 points at the beginning of the day, were both a combination of experience and youthful exuberance.

Annadale pushed back and the opening few minutes were even. Gradually Pembroke eased their way into the game and quick interpassing between Elliott, Sothern and finally Elliott again saw Pembroke take the lead in the 4th minute. In the 11th minute Sothern reversed over the bar. A green card to Elliott, the first of three for Pembroke, saw a 2 minute suspension. The end of the Quarter the score remained 1-0 to Pembroke. Annadale had defended well and managed occasional sorties into the Pembroke 22 but nothing resulted.

The opening minute of the 2nd Quarter saw the first of 6 Penalty Corners to Annadale but all were cleared. Just afterwards a long ball saw an Annadale shot from the edge of the circle and the keeper’s kick was deflected off a Pembroke player to Andrew Williamson to force over the line for the equaliser. The half time score remained 1-1.

Annadale had two penalty corners in succession midway through the 3rd Quarter and from the second a penalty stroke emerged following a save off a foot on the line which Hamilton converted low to the ‘keepers left. This made it 2-1 to Annadale at the end of the 3rdQuarter. Their defence and midfield had absorbed anything that Pembroke tried and increasingly Pembroke chose to run rather than pass their way through a resolute defence with Moore, Smyth and Hamilton to the fore.

In the last Quarter started with another penalty corner to Annadale which was again cleared. Pembroke continued to press and finally in the 31st minute a shot was blocked on the line. The resulting stroke was coolly converted by Alan Sothern to make it 2-2.

The final minutes of the game saw plenty of action!
Pembroke twice left with ‘keeper Williamson completely exposed. Whilst he was equal to the challenge of at least two counter attacks finally, in the 33 and 34th minutes, International Caruth took him on and netted twice to ensure an Annadale win and to deny a losing bonus point to Pembroke.

Full IHL roundup »
Despite the loss on Saturday Pembroke still have it all to play for, with only 1 point separating the top 4 teams. The top 2 teams in each Pool will go through to the IHL Finals next May.

Ladies Roundup
The Ladies 7ths continued their unbeaten streak, with a 2-2 draw on Saturday against Railway, they lie in 2nd place in Div 9. The Ladies 6ths had a great Cup win away to Clontarf late on Saturday evening, a super result for <s>Roisin Watson’s</s> Darina Errity’s girls. The 3rds fought back for a draw against a very useful Trinity 2nds side, Fiona Keenan picking up the goal following a surging run from Lorraine Horgan. The 8ths faced a tough Cup date away to Newbridge and lost out 2-0.

Three Rock Rovers 2 Pembroke Wanderers 4 (Alan Sothern; Mick O’Connor; Mathew Brown; Tim Hill)
A last minute goal from Peter Blakeney denied Pembroke maximum points from their weekend outing to Grange Road over the Bank Holiday. Pembroke were in control for most of the tie but were disappointed not to come away with 4 points after Three Rock’s later ‘corner effort. Still, the 3 points now move Pembroke into second place in Pool B, and they will be looking to further build on this win when they take on Annadale, home in Serpentine Ave this weekend.

IHL full report »
Pembroke got their IHL campaign on track with a comfortable victory over Three Rock Rovers at Grange Road but will rue a last gasp penalty corner concession which cost them a winning bonus point.

They got off to a dream start, Alan Sothern whipping home his side’s second penalty corner in the fourth minute. Mick O’Connor made it two when he bounced the ball into the circle and crashed home a spectacular volley from the circle’s edge.

With just ten minutes gone, the signs were ominous as Craig Wilson dinged the post and Matt Brown crashed the bar before the South African got on the mark just before the break from another corner.
Rovers struggled badly in the first period but stepped up in the second, Colin Huet’s impudent tackle opening the door for Peter Blakeney to roof a reverse-stick shot.

Pembroke got back into bonus territory when Tim Hill scored against his former club as the Rovers’ defence stopped, waiting for a corner to be given again. The livewire forward played on and snapped in a brilliant effort.

And it looked like that was the way it would stay until 90 seconds from time when Paddy O’Connor won a contested corner which Blakeney fired low past Davey Williamson, taking a slight sheen off a strong win.

Not too much hockey action over the Bank Holiday, which should hopefully mean some good crowds for a full IHL fixture list this weekend. After a 2-2 draw at home two weekend’s ago, Pembroke will be looking to get their campaign back on track in Grange Road where they take on Three Rock, who lie 6 places beneath them in the league after 5 games.
IHL preview »
Also in Pool B this will be the first time Three Rock have entertained Pembroke at Grange Road in the IHL under the present format. Three Rock will hope to bring back in some of the players that missed their 5-4 loss to Glenanne in Leinster last Saturday. Midfielders Craig Moore and Gavin Bourke look set to return having played in the first round of IHL matches against Annadale. A couple of schoolboys may have limited availability due to the All-Ireland schoolboy’s championships and could be rested as a result but confirmation of this will be delayed until closer to the tournament tip off. Pembroke, with a number of changes in their line up since last season, will have to focus on gaining maximum points from a young and improving Rovers Squad. Pembroke know what a determined and gritty squad Rovers have become this season and last. Pembroke, having shared the points at home with Cork C of I two weeks ago, know that they will have to convert any opportunities from set pieces through Alan Sothern in particular. Led this season by Ronan Flannery and containing several other regular IHL campaigners at the back and in midfield plus Sothern, Shimmins, Good and the Elliott brothers up front Pembroke may also have to snap up goals from open play if they are to challenge in this Seasons IHL.

Pembroke Wanderers 2 Church of Ireland 2
G Elliott; A Sothern | J Jermyn; G Wilkinson

Officials: Robert Johnston; Simon O’Connor TO: Brian Chadwick Judges David Kenna & Michael O’Brien

This is the first time in the current IHL format that Pembroke entertained their friends from C of I Cork.

Alan Sothern, Pembroke’s most threating forward had hit the bar in the 7th minute. This was shortly followed by two successive S/C’s both of which were saved. C I’s only corner of the match came after 10 minute of the Quarter and the combination of Hobbs, Sweetnam and Jermyn saw the ball whizz past Williamson for the opening goal of the game and C I’s first. There were flurry of attacking hockey from both sides but never enough time for the fast running forwards to get a touch although right at the end of the quarter Sothern got to the ball first and deflected it past Lynch but hit the post. The quarter finished 0-1 to CI.

Early in the 2nd Quarter Pritchard was disposed just inside the PW half and four CI players created a quick break and a 4 on 2 developed but Williamson advanced well to clear for a long corner. In the last 5 minutes of the Quarter Pembroke raised the tempo and brought hurried clearances from the CI defence and in particular Captain and CK, Billy Lynch and Philip Smith and veteran Nigel Buttimer. Jermyn, who endured time off the pitch for a green card, Hobbs and Smith caught the eye for CI and for Pembroke, Sothern Conlon, Flannery and Elliott. Earnest endeavour rather than high skill was on display with the ball frequently going out of play. The Half Time score was 0-1 to CI.

The 3rd Quarter commenced and almost immediately a yellow card to Shane O’Donnell for persistent fouling of the player in possession. Pembroke took the opportunity to press forward but only a snap shot from Sothern to show while CI were down to 10 men. In the 11th minute from a strong run by Hobbs who was fouled just inside the Pembroke half. The free was taken whilst the majority of players from both sides were wrong footed and the ball slipped through to Gary Wilkinson to beat the onrushing Williamson with a deft lift from just inside the circle, 0-2 to CI.

The two goal lead was short lived with a good goal from play from Elliott to bring Pembroke back to 1-2. In the 16th minute of the Quarter Wilson was Yellow Carded for a stick infringement and the Quarter ended with Pembroke maintaining the better the possession and also of play territorially although down 1-2. In effect the game only really came to life when Pembroke were 2 down. Up to that point there were very few chances or clear shots from play. Pritchard, Lewis and Brown drove forward for Pembroke but the tightly marked forwards could not get enough space.

No sooner had the 4th Quarter commenced than Smith’s pass to the right was too hard and the ball went out of play. Elliot was swiftly on to the push in and played it back to the penalty spot for Sothern finally to take possession and on the reverse crash the ball past Lynch and into the net for Pembroke’s equalising goal. In the 5th minute a quick attack brought a two on one led to Pembroke’s 3rd S/C and although well saved again by Lynch a further corner resulted. That too was cleared leaving Pembroke with a S/C count of none from 4 and CI 1 from 1. The remainder of the game saw Pembroke with more of the ball but only a share of the points.

Pembroke Wanderers Men fell at the semi-final stage in last weekend’s IHL Finals held at Hillsborough loosing to hosts Lisnagarvey who in turn lost out on a Penalty shoot out to Banbridge after the Final itself finished 2-2 AET. Owen Magee’s penalty shoot-out goal was the vital play which secured Banbridge their first Irish senior title in 20 years, their victory means Ireland will be represented at next year’s EHL by Cookstown (Irish Senior Cup winners) and themselves. Read the match report from the IHL Final here.

Pembroke’s own two year reign as Club Champions came to end on Saturday following a 2-1 loss to ‘Garvey – official match report here:

Lisnagarvey 2 Pembroke Wanderers 1

Lisnagarvey ended Pembroke’s two-year reign as Irish Hockey League champions as Timmy Cockram led the Ulster champions to victory on home turf on the Comber Road. It means the province will have two places in the 2011/12 EuroHockey League, too, as either ’Garvey or Bann will now join Cookstown – Irish Senior Cup champions – in the continent’s flagship club event.

Bitty and scrappy, neither side managed to get much rhythm going at any point but the northern side probably shaded proceedings though they were twice thankful to the crossbar to keep them ahead.

Pembroke welcomed back Colin Kelly, Gordon Elliott and Paddy Conlon to their panel following their European exertions but were rocked in the seventh minute when Timmy Cockram rounded the impressive Simon Thornton and reversed home.

Gordon Elliott cracked the bar four minutes later while a corner was deflected wide. Patrick Good, however, did find the net in the 31st minute following a right-wing move to make it 1-1 at the break. Cockram restored the lead very early into the second period from the penalty spot, a heavily debated decision by Pembroke who felt it was stick rather than body which prevented the ball crossing the line. It brought the ’Garvey man to within two of Shane O’Donoghue at the top of the goalscorer’s charts for this term. Chances were of the half-cooked nature, thereafter. Mick O’Connor ghosted past a couple but his slip pass got only half a touch from Kirk Shimmins while Arbuthnot had a cut from a difficult angle – it whizzed high and handsome.

Ronan Flannery drew a fine low stick save from Alex McRoberts before Thornton kept the tie just about alive with a double save from Arbuthnot and Daniel. Cockram ran out time and Lisnagarvey have a shot of their first national title since 2005.

Retention of their title as Irish Club Champions and a place in next season’s premier European Club Championship – The EHL is the prize on offer this weekend as the lads gear up for their semi-final match up against Lisngarvey in in Hillsborough. Pembroke beat ‘Garvey in last years final, but the sides will be more evenly matched this time out with the loss of senior players like Ronan Gormley, playing with continental sides this season. The winners will face either Glenanne or Banbridge in the final on Sunday.
Extract from an interview with Adam Pritchard taken from the Irish Hockey League website:
For 2010 champions Pembroke, their success was the culmination of five years of building a team, one which swept to a glut of titles in Leinster and the national stage. Building a team of superstars took a while but it dismantling was swift as Conor and David Harte, Craig Fulton, Andy McConnell, Alan Sothern, Justin Sherriff and Ronan Gormley all moved on last summer. It obviously left a major void to fill but, while Brendon Carolan is in the process of reshaping the panel; Irish international Adam Pritchard says that the residual belief of that vintage has been retained even if it is not immediately apparent.

“Last season, I think there was kind of an unspoken expectation that we would win. We were the holders and we’d done quite a good performance in the EHL just a couple of weeks before the IHL finals.

“We felt we were on the up and up and it would take a very good performance from another club to beat us. It sounds arrogant but there was a lot of confidence in that side. Now we come into this weekend and it’s much more low-key. I don’t think anyone else expects a lot from us but at the same time there is a lot of belief within the team that if we get things right, we can go a long way”

“In a way, the same belief is there but it isn’t so outwardly visible. There’s a lot of onus on the guys that have been there before to make sure the new guys, especially the likes of Eric Foy and Kirk Shimmins, to make sure they believe we have the ability in the team rather than if we go out with a defeatist attitude, we’re not going to get anywhere.”

His side face Lisnagarvey at 5pm on Saturday just a week after a rough 11-0 defeat to Club de Campo in the EuroHockey League. Drawing solace from that wreckage is tough but the Munster man says there are a few things which can be learned from.

“That’s the key word, challenge. Friday was a bit of a depressing one. No one likes to lose that heavily but it’s up to us to bounce back.

“If we can take any positives from that defeat and use them as building block. As a learning experience, how Campo played and how we approached the game was a contrast. Everything they did was one-twos, slick, guys moving off the ball.

“Anyone who was watching the game will have seen we were much more, maybe naive; thinking we could beat two or three players and that kind of stuff. Hopefully, we can learn the lessons from that.”

Pembroke and Banbridge qualify from Pool B in a day of high drama in the Irish Hockey League. The Lads finish top of the Pool, with Monkstown being edged out on goal difference. Super results lads and well deserved – IHL Finals weekend will be on the May Bank Holiday weekend!

Official match report from the Irish Hockey League website:
This was a vital match for both teams, Pembroke, current All Ireland Champions, needing to win but a draw being sufficient for Monkstown to progress to the IHL Semi Finals in April.

Pembroke's Simon Thornton reaches for a high ball. Photo Adrian Boehm

In the first attack, in the 2nd minute, Maurice Elliott converted a close range opportunity into a goal. Monkstown pressed and for a second stick challenge Michael O’Connor in the 4th minute received a green card and spent two minutes in the “sin bin”. In the 9th minute, using a ploy they repeated several times, in hitting the ball hard into the circle from outside the 22 Monkstown had a penalty corner from a foot infringement by Colin Kelly. This resulted in a fine full length sticksave to his right by Thornton from Ewington.
In the 13th minute another foot resulted in a second penalty corner to Monkstown and this time Ewington put the drag flick under the crossbar and Thornton was comprehensively beaten. Controversy followed in the 18th minute the TO’s Bench tried to operate the “hooter” to end the Quarter at precisely the same time as Maurice Elliot converted his close range effort to make in 2-1 to Pembroke. The Pitch clock, counting down, recorded 17-43mins to play. The Umpire indicated a goal and the players left the pitch. However the goal did not stand due the attempted sounding of the “hooter” and the quarter ended 1-1.

The 2nd Quarter commenced and the game moved from end to without any clear cut chances to either side. In the 29th minute Stephen Cole beat the ‘keeper from the edge of the circle but although a goal was awarded by Umpire Clarke the other Umpire, Colvin Beatty, had spotted the ball had caught the player on the body before shooting. The score remained at 1-1 with a good Pembroke attack well cleared by ‘Keeper Fitzgerald from Paddy Good in the 35th minute. No Penalty Corners to Pembroke and two to Monkstown in 1st Half.

Monkstown pushed back in 3rd Quarter and quickly Pembroke attacked the defence for whom Groves and Ewington were prominent but held firm. Several Monkstown attacks through Brian Groves and Kyle Good broke through but their passes across goal were not finished off. A quicksilver attack in the 44th minute through Gordon Elliott, O’Connor and Good led to Pembroke’s one penalty corner of the game. This was charged down and cleared successfully by Monkstown. There was a melee in the 49th minute in the Monkstown goal mouth following which Paddy Good left the pitch with a shoulder injury.

The 4th Quarter started and in the 55th minute from a Pritchard mistake a quick shot was saved. Shortly after Ewington was green carded and temporarily ‘Town were reduced to 10 men. The game was moving quickly up and down and in the 65th minute from a Pembroke counterattack Paddy Good from play bundled the ball over the line to the satisfaction of both Umpires to give a 2-1 lead to the home team.

Monkstown pressed but Pembroke for whom Colin Kelly in his 17th season of Senior Hockey, Karl Lynch first season with Pembroke and Ronan Flannery were outstanding and held on to claim top spot in Pool B and face the runners up in Pool A.

Prior to the IHL tie between Instonians and Pembroke a number of Youth U12 games took place which provided fun for all.
The IHL fixture took off with a quick place from one end to the other. From the start Pembroke looked more threatening however with just 9 minutes gone Instonians took the lead when Imitaz Pannu scored from a short corner.

Instonians continued to press and on 14 minutes Chris Kirk took a good shot which was saved but Thornton in the Pembroke goal. 1st quarter ended with Instonians 1-0 in front.

Pembroke had a period of sustained pressure and with 26 minutes on the clock Scott Furlong got the equaliser from a penalty corner. On 30 minutes Nigel Skillan, the Instonian goalkeeper made two good saves from Pembroke corners.

Pembroke dominated the remainder of the second quarter with Instonians relying on counter attack play but in the last minute of the half Patrick Good scored from close range to put Pembroke 2-1 in front at the break.

The second half started as the first with fast paced end to end play. Instonians had a series of penalty corners with Mark Irwin having the best chance on 45 minutes but the shot strayed wide.

Pembroke immediately countered and after an impressive move down the right Michael O’Connor made it 3-1 to Pembroke.
While Instonians took the game to Pembroke the resilient defense stood strong and Pembroke ran out worthy 3-1 victors.
Instonians awarded man of the match prizes to Pembroke’s Patrick Conlon and Nigel Skillin of the Instonians goal.
A good crowd saw an enjoyable game of hockey.

Pembroke go two points clear of Monkstown in Pool B of the IHL after beating YMCA at home on Saturday…

Pembroke Wanderers 3 YMCA 2
06 November 2010 | Serpentine Avenue | 3pm

On what started as a lovely afternoon, the calm before the predicted storm, Pembroke welcomed YM for their first visit to Serpentine Avenue in the IHL. This “top of the table” clash between old rivals held forth a potentially fine game of attacking hockey.

Pembroke tipped off and there was an early thrust by Alan Giles. The game settled down with midfields cancelling each other out. A quick one between Panther and Maurice Elliot left the latter with a one on one with Walker who forced the attacker wide and his shot lobbed out over the side line. There were no corners and only two shots in the 1st Quarter. Unfortunately a protracted, heavy and quite cold shower made conditions unpleasant for the decent sized crowd, players and umpires.

Mossie, Paddy Conlon and Alan Giles line up for a penalty corner. Photo Eleni Henry

In the 19th minute from YM’s first penalty corner a switch right left Jonny Bruton with a clear shot which found the net. Maybe the defence would not be pleased conceding the opening goal. Immediately afterwards Pembroke equalised, also from their first Penalty Corner when Walker could parry but not stop a drag flick from Jethro Eustace entering his net. 1-1. Shortly later from a Pembroke attack which was cleared YM had a one on one with Jones but the shot from Marcus Richardson was over the bar.

In the 25th minute from a failed Pembroke overhead YM built up a concerted attack down the left. The attacker forced his way into the circle but the ball escaped several defenders going across the circle where Andy Walker was on hand to finish, coolly by hitting into the net from just outside the stroke spot and to his right. Pembroke raised the tempo and Walker was called upon to clear from first an Alan Giles reverse shot and then from Paddy Good from the rebound. Immediately afterwards another Pembroke attack was halted at the edge of the circle and from the clearance YM had a one on one but the shot from Marcus Richardson was over the bar. In the final minute of the Quarter Paddy Good earned a Penalty Corner but this was cleared following a fine save from the ‘keeper and his defenders.

The second half saw Craig Wilson give away a Penalty Corner which was slipped left and blocked only for a further Pembroke mistake and another Penalty Corner awarded again this was switched left but cleared. This was the signal for Pembroke to take the game vigorously to YM and constant attaching prompted by Giles, Eustace Lynch and Conlon set up shots from Elliott, Good and O’Connor. ‘Keeper Walker, Simon Walker and Hewett were under pressure and it was not a surprise when Michael O’Connor was clear of his marker and pushed in a ball in the 42nd minute for the equaliser. Umpire Alistair Shute was by far the busier of the two in this Quarter and incurred the wrath of YM players and Bench on more than one occasion. Several Pembroke corners were saved but the Quarter finished2-2.

Just after the restart a lovely YM move down the right resulted in a pull back but Rob Whelan shot well wide. This was YM’s best chance of the half with both teams looking for their third goal. There were opportunities for both teams although YM’s were mostly on the break. Finally, in the 64th minute Paddy Conlon, ghosting in on the far post, from an attack down Pembroke’s inside right channel, coolly tucked the ball into the net despite the scrambling efforts of Walker; 3-2. In the 66th minute YM had a last chance but neither Jones the Pembroke ‘Keeper or the YM forward could follow the flight of a cross from the left and the ball was forced away. In the 68th Maurice Elliot was unlucky to have been adjudged by Umpire McConkey not to have retreated 5 metres and was given the only Green Card of the match.

A win for the defending Champions against the current Leinster League leaders sees them top of the table ahead of the 3rd Series of matches away to Banbridge on the 4th December.

Goals: Jethro Eustace, Paddy Conlon, Michael O’Connor (Pembroke), Johnny Bruton, Andy Walker (YMCA)

Men 1sts v YMCA, 3pm
No doubting the biggest game of the weekend – the Men take on Leinster rivals YMCA in the second round of matches in this year’s IHL at Serpentine Avenue at 3pm. Both outfits have recorded victories in their respective first round of matches, with Pembroke beating Cork Harlequins 5-2 and YMCA beating Monkstown 2-1. Spectators can look forward to two teams committed to attacking hockey in Saturday’s battle for precious IHL points. Pembroke are on a roll after a 3-2 win over Monkstown in the league last Saturday, while YM are the current league leaders, on maximum points after 4 games, so it should be a great encounter.

Ladies Cups in full swing, 4ths look to go second
Elsewhere the Ladies 1sts travel to Milltown to take on Alex in the league. With both teams likely to be vying for IHL placings at the end of the season, this fixture is one of the most crucial in the ladies calendar. Anna O Neill returns while Aoife Sherriff will be hoping to return from a hamstring injury which saw her sidelined last weekend.

Katherine Duff captains the Ladies 1sts this season Photo Adrian Boehm

The Ladies 6ths are 8ths are the first teams to be involved in Cup action – the 8ths face Trinity in the early game, while Baz Cromer’s 6ths, with Bernie Barry captaining travel to UCD. With the Ladies 2nds and 3rds on a weekend off, focus elsewhere will shift to the 4ths who take on Muckross at home, a win for the girls will put them into second place in the league, so in between all the rugby be sure to stick your head out onto the balcony to give Becks and her girls some raucous encouragement..

Well done lads!
Elsewhere, the Leinster boys U16 panel has been named – the tournament takes place in Newpark next weekend, and Pembroke are pleased to confirm 8 players on the panel. Well done lads and good luck next weekend. Mark Bergin (Sutton Park/Pembroke), George Dagg (Sandford Park/Pembroke), Cillian Hynes (St Andrew’s/Pembroke), David Kane (St Killians/Pembroke), Hugh Lavery (Sandford Park/Pembroke), Mark Loughrey (St Andrew’s/Pembroke), Jack Ryan (St Andrew’s/Pembroke), Alex Serviss (St Andrew’s/Pembroke). More info and squad details can be found on The Hook.

Hallowe’eeeeeen Party!

Last but not least – don’t put those Hallowe’en costumes away just yet! This Saturday night is party night in Pembroke, Happy Hour from 6.30PM.
On a beautiful day under a clear blue sky the first of this season’s IHL matches got underway with Umpires, Geoff Conn and Kris Cholewa. The two teams each showing significant changes, particularly the two times League champions Pembroke following the departure of 7 of last years winning squad and welcoming a new Coach, Brendon Carolan from South Africa. In addition they have several additions to their squad including Keith Crawford, Ronan Flannery and Karl Lynch from C.I. Harlequins welcome back David Eakins from London and also have a new Coach, Philip Oakley. There is rarely much between these two teams and that is how it turned out in the first half.

Mick O'Connor on the ball.
Pembroke pressed and had control of the ball for the better part of the half. Pembroke earned two penalty corners in the first quarter which here well saved by Chris Daunt the second being deflected off the crossbar and cleared. 0-0 at the end of the quarter although Quins picked up their pace strongly towards the end with John Hobbs and Jason Black defending resolutely.

Pembroke resumed their attacks with Karl Lynch, Gordon Elliott and Paddy Conlon to the fore and their pressure earned a green card for Paul Lombard for not retreating inside the 25. Whilst off the field a third penalty corned earned by Pembroke was converted by Jethro Eustace low to the ‘keeper’s left in the 24th minute. A further green card at the end of the half was awarded to David Lombard and the half time finished 1-0 to Pembroke.

The start of the second half saw a flurry of green cards for Keith Crawford and Maurice Elliott but Quins could not take advantage of the disparity of numbers. Pembroke were very dangerous from he left and deflected goals in the 49th and 50th minutes from Brandon Panther and Maurice Elliott saw Pembroke take a 3-0 lead. Jethro Eustace earned a yellow card in the 51st minute but in spite of this in the 52nd minute Karl Lynch initiated an attack from inside his own on the left and with an interchange of passes finished off by netting and the quarter ended a Quins penalty corner, their first which was well saved by Gowan Jones. The score at the end of the quarter was 4-0.

The action did not stop there and in the 55th and 60th minutes Quins had two more penalty corners and David Eakins netted the latter to close the gap. A lovely flowing series of passes between the Elliott brothers left Michael O’Connor to finish off from close-in to restore Pembroke’s four goal advantage.

In the last few minutes of the game as Pembroke pressed there were a couple of breakaways by Quins and in the 64th minute Philip McLoughlin pulled a further goal back for Quins. There were a few ruffled feathers in the by now congested areas in midfield and players became a little excited. However Pembroke were able to run down the clock and the final score was 5-2 to Pembroke.

Another weekend of top action kicks off in Pembroke with the Men beginning their All Ireland title defence of the IHL League on Saturday @3pm. Last weekend every Pembroke home game was won on Saturday, all in all the Ladies picked up 6 wins from 7, the Men 5 wins from 6 – both sections will be hoping for repeat results come Saturday evening.

Gilesy lifts the IHL trophy last season

In the group stages of the IHL Pembroke Men will play Cork Harlequins, YMCA, Monkstown, Instonians and Banbridge, the top two going through to the final four next May. In last year’s competition Alan Giles lifted the trophy following wins over Glenanne (in a stunning semi final) and Lisnagarvey in the Final. It was Pembroke’s second consecutive win in the tournament, and put them through to EHL competition this season.
Under Brendon Carolan this season the lads will face new challenges with many new faces in the squad. Tomorrow’s game against Cork Harlequins at home should be a cracker, with plenty of names making their IHL debut – get down to Pembroke good and early to enjoy the action.

Elsewhere the Ladies 1sts will be hoping to build on last week’s 3-0 win over Bray, they face Glenanne at home @1pm, with Shona Doyle back in the ranks fully fit. The Ladies 2nds also enjoyed a good win over North Kildare last weekend but travel to Milltown for what should be a tougher affair in an early test of Mick O’ Connor’s side. The Ladies 3rds play at home following last weekend’s impressive 2-1 win away to Clontarf, schoolgirl Joanna McDonald scoring on her debut, while the Ladies 4ths have the most unenviable trip of all – facing Navan on the grit at midday. Barbara Treacy’s 5ths will be hoping for home win against Suttonians following last Saturdays tough draw in the rain away to Hermes, while the 6ths travel to Loreto at 2.30pm having taken the 3 points away to Phoenix Pk last weekend. The Ladies 7ths had the biggest win of all last weekend – putting 5 away against Corinthians – Sarah Large, Roisin Watson and new girls Karina Cotter, Lynn Boucher and Olwen Scally all getting on the score sheet.

1st round draws for the Mens Irish Senior Cup and ESB Ladies Irish Senior Cup will be made by the IHA in bar in Pembroke after the Men’s game at 5pm.

Pembroke will be back in the EHL next season thanks to a second successive IHL title, sealed at Grange Road this afternoon following a 4-1 win over Lisnagarvey. Alan Sothern notched up 3 goals on the day, his first came within minutes of the start. His final goal was a great piece of skill – Paddy Good chased a ball down on the right flank and picked Sothern out near the top of the D. He calmly dragged the ball low and to the right to seal the win for the lads.

Winning the IHL means Pembroke will join Glenanne in next season’s EHL as the top seeded Club. The final lacked the drama and contraversy from yesterday’s games but Pembroke were deserving winners on the day.

Glenanne fought back from 4-0 down to level it 4-4 in a cracker of a tie at Grange Rd today. Indeed the Glens could have taken the tie 5-4, Graham Shaw narrowly missing at the far post from a sliding effort. Pembroke had built their lead through Alan Sothern, Mick O Connor and Gilesy and had looked to have wrapped the game up pretty early, Glenanne never gave up though and goals from Stephen Butler signalled the fightback.

The winning silver goal came at the end of the first 5 min period of extra time on the hooter. Pembroke won a corner and switched it right, the pull back eventually found Conor Harte in space, and he slapped the ball into the net.

On a dull afternoon featuring persistent drizzle following initial heavy rain, reigning IHL champions Pembroke Wanderers faced Irish Senior Cup finalists Monkstown in this fifth round pool match. Pembroke having already qualified for the IHL semi final and Monkstown having only a mathematical chance of progressing from the pool, could have made for a low key game. This however was not the case as both teams maintained a high pace and intensity throughout. Despite all the energy expended however, the game finished in a rare scoreless draw.

Pembroke started the sharper and dominated the first quarter, creating several openings, none of which led to any clear shooting chances as Monkstown’s vigilant defence smothered everything. Monkstown were forced to attack on the break but again no shooting chances were created.

The second quarter followed suit except that Monkstown created a little more pressure around the Pembroke circle, one incident requiring a double intervention from David Harte. Pembroke’s sharpness through midfield and up front provided several opportunities but these were either not converted or dealt with by the excellent David Fitzgerald.

The third quarter saw a significant increase in Monkstown possession, leading to a number of chances, including their first short corner. Pembroke followed suit and created several chances themselves, including short corners. Again the respective defences were to the fore, with both keepers saving sharply, defenders clearing up and attackers miscuing their attempts.

The fourth quarter continued similarly, chances being created at both ends and being miscued or smothered. Monkstown did however create the two best chances, with an Andy Ewington drag being spectacularly stick saved by the excellent David Harte, before Ian Allen was found behind Pembroke’s defence for a clear run at the circle, only to be foiled by another David Harte intervention. Late Pembroke pressure led to opportunities for several players but came to naught. All in all, it was a day for the defences, particularly the two superb goalkeepers on view.

Pembroke Wanderers 3 – 1 Corinthians
17 April 2010 | Serpentine Avenue | 15.00
Dan Clarke / Robert Johnston TO: Brian George Asst: Joe Connolly

On a glorious late spring afternoon at Serpentine Avenue the top two teams in Pool A, after three round, were renewing a local rivalry which has seen the same teams finish first and second in the Leinster Senior League in 2009/10.

Cast in bright sunshine the deep green turf and surround of deep sky blue a good crowd saw Pembroke in their purple, amber and black kit defend the Railway End in the first half. Corinthian in red and white took the tip-off.

In the opening five minute the teams settled into the game with Pembroke retaining more of the ball. From a solo attack in the 6th minute into the circle Maurice Elliot was denied a shooting opportunity and from the resultant penalty corner Alan Sothern converted to make it 1-0 to the home team. Probably Ross Murray will feel he should have done better in covering the drag flick in the air and just to the left of the centre of the goal. Pembroke had more of the possession but with few scoring opportunities.

At the start of the second quarter Michael O’Connor had a fine run on the left but none of the onrushing forwards could get a touch which would have converted it into a goal. In the 25th minute a Pembroke mistake resulted in a Corinthian penalty corner but this was charged down by the runners and cleared. Corinthian’s were mostly absorbing pressure and counter attacking. In the 28th minute Darren Kimfley drove into the circle but his final pass was pushed wide. In the last minute of the half Pembroke’s second penalty corner followed from a quick attack and the flick by Conor Harte was pushed wide and the half ended 1-0 to Pembroke.

A series of uncharacteristic slack passes and poor ball retention early in the second half saw the initiative pass to Corinthians. The back four of Cronje, Fuller, Blennerhasset and Pelow moved the ball around but from a counterattack in the 42nd minute Conor Harte pushed forward through the right channel. He delivered a final pass just outside the circle to Gordon Elliott who dispatched it with great skill, on the reverse, for Pembroke’s second goal. His shot gave Murray no chance. Forced to try to use the ball better Corinthian’s had several chances and these were primarily down Pembroke’s right. In the 50th minute Carson hit the post and in the 52nd the final ball was again pushed wide with the goal undefended. Corinthian’s were working hard but not retaining enough of the ball in midfield or up front to force too many errors from Pembroke. The end of the 3rs Quarter saw the score 2-1 to Pembroke.

In the 55 minute a long ball was deflected by a Pembroke defender’s foot and a penalty corner, only Corinthian’s second, from Doherty was saved by David Harte. In the 63rd minute a clear chance from a long ball from the left was put over the bar by Chris Pelow. Time was running out for Corinthian’s. Pembroke were regularly breaking out of defence on their right and from Paddy Good pressurising the defence a move Craig Fulton and Andy McConnell saw the latter get the final touch to secure the victory and bonus point to assure Pembroke of Pool A leadership with one Match, at home to Monkstown, on 1st May to come.

The Ladies were edged out of this years IHL following a heart-breaking 5-4 loss away to Railway Union this afternoon at Park Avenue. The girls fought back from 4-1 down to deservedly level it with with only minutes to go but a Railway goal scored from a short corner on the final whistle, denied them the draw they needed to advance to the semi final stages.

Cork Harlequins win over Ards means that they, and Railway advance to the semi-final stages. In Pool B Hermes and Pegasus took the other two semi-final spots.

Irish Hockey League official match report:

Railway Union 5 (Nikkie Evans x 2; Jean McDonnell x 2; Isobel Joyce)
Pembroke Wanderers 4 (Sarah Clarke; Shona Doyle; Rachel McKeon; Anli Kotze )

14 March 2010 | 13.00
Sean Murtagh / Gail Taylor; TO: Pauline Corrigan Asst: Sue Lacey

In a 9 goal fest in Park Avenue Railway came out narrow winners. Pembroke started the game stronger, looking for the win they needed to qualify. They were the first to get on the score sheet with Sarah Clarke scoring her trade mark short corner strike from the first corner of the match. However, it was Railway who had the best of the play in the second quarter Nikki Evans finishing off a good run by Kate Dillon and Jean McDonnell putting away a corner just before half time. Half time score: Railway 2 – Pembroke 1.

Anli Koetze was voted Man of the Match

Railway edged further ahead in the third quarter, an Isobel Joyce strike from the edge of the circle taking a deflection off a Pembroke stick into the goal. Their fourth goal came after good work by Sinead Walsh was finished by Nikki Evans for her second goal of the day. For many it looked like Railway now had the game in the bag with bonus point secure but Pembroke had other ideas adding their second goal one minute later, Shona Doyle pouncing on a corner rebound off the cross bar. The match entered the last quarter with Railway 2 goals the better in 6 but Pembroke, in a strong comeback, were soon on level terms Rachel McKeon finishing off a good Pembroke move and then player of the match Anli Kotze sending the ball into the net from a short corner strike. 4 all and with Pembroke having an eye on the Cork Harlequins/Ards result there was all to play for.

The last 15 minutes were a tempestuous affair with Natalie Fulton spending 2 minutes in the sin bin. Railway were awarded a penalty corner on the final hooter which Jean McDonnell crashed into the goal, to win a competitive encounter.

Final Score: Railway 5: Pembroke 4
Player of the Match: Anli Kotze, Pembroke Wanderers

Starting XI (Away) Kelly Scott (GK), Natalie Fulton, Rachel McKeon, Sarah Clarke, Shona Doyle, Anli Kotze, Noelle Farrell, Karen Hales, Hayley O’Donnell, Orla Fox, Jill Collins.

Pembroke played a fast passing game against Instonians and came out worthy 3-0 winners.

Alan in action against CHC

As in previous games between the two sides Pembroke took the game to Instonians and it was on five minutes that a midfield mistake by Instonians led to Pembroke winning possession with the ball being switched quickly before Alan Sothern slid the ball past goalkeeper Nigel Skillen.

Instonians came back quickly at Pembroke and a brilliant pass from John Watson saw Chris Kirk dive full length in the circle only for the ball to flash pass the Pembroke goal. The game moved from end to end with Pembroke looking more dangerous on the attack.

On 29 minutes a clumsy tackle in the Instonians circle led to a penalty corner and from the resultant corner Alan Giles scored number 2 for Pembroke although it did seem that an Instonian defender had been obstructed.

So halftime came with Pembroke 2–0 in front. Even at this stage Instonians might have hoped that they would get something from the game but within five minutes of the restart a Justin Sherriff break saw him square the ball to Sothern who had the simple task of scoring Pembroke’s third goal from three yards out.

Pembroke continued to attack and Nigel Skillen made a further two fine saves. At the other end the Instonians attack failed to penetrate a resolute Pembroke defence and so they went home worthy 3–0 winners.

The Man of the Match award went to Alan Sothern of Pembroke.

The girls needed 3 points from this Pool A encounter to stay in second (and qualifying) spot in this their penultimate IHL group match. Ards took a surprise lead but Pembroke earned their win through goals from Jill Collins and Sarah Clarke.

27 February 2010 | Serpentine Avenue | 14.30
Carol Metchette / Moira Flahive; TO: Aoibheann McNicholas; Sue Lacey

On a cloudy and cool afternoon in Dublin, almost warm by recent standards, this vital match for both teams in Pool A tipped off at 2-30pm.

Two points separated the hosts, Pembroke, in second place and Ards in fourth place with only one match remaining after this round.

Pembroke are having a mixed season in Leinster languishing in the bottom half of the League but they have advanced to the final of the Leinster Senior Cup on St. Patrick’s Day having beaten Hermes last week. Ards are currently second in Ulster to Armagh but have games in hand to the leaders. However they have come off a defeat last week to perennial champions, Peagsus.

Jilly scores to level it 1-1

Ards won the toss and Pembroke tipped off. The first few minutes were spent with Ards attacking through Janice Vaughan and Eimear Horan. The sporadic attacks by Pembroke came too little as the final pass failed to be delivered accurately. A searching run after 15 minutes by Karen Hales led to a shot which was well saved by Claire Black and the rebound was put over the bar by Jill Collins. The Quarter ended 0-0.

The game came alive in the 23rd minute when a hard hit inside the 22 was deflected by Clara Chamberlayne for an own goal and a 1-0 lead to Ards. The lead was short-lived when in the 26th minute from a quick switch of play Jill Collins gave the ‘keeper no chance when she shot high into the top corner. This brought about a concentrated period of attacking play by Pembroke. There then followed a green card to Karen Hales and the mandatory two minutes in “the sin bin”. Ards earned their first P/C following this incident in the 31st Minute. This corner was switched and saved but a further corner ensued but the shot was too high and although ending in the net it was disallowed. Pembroke attacked quickly and earned their first P/C following a good run by Clara Chamberlayne. However the corner was saved but the rebound was hammered into the net by Sarah Clarke and the half ended with Pembroke leading 2-1.

The 3rd Quarter commenced with a swift attack by Ards and a deliberate block in the 22 led to a P/C This was saved by the Pembroke defence and Ards continued to enjoy most of the play but not having many shots. Pembroke’s Wendy Hobson earned a green card in the 41st minute but her team survived the temporary loss. In the 46th minute an excellent run by Jill Collins led to a further P/C for “feet” but the shot was well saved by Claire Black. Pembroke’s first yellow card arrived in the 46th minute. Captain, Rachel McKeon, getting tied up in the middle of the Pembroke half and an over physical challenge led to her “sin binning”. However the quarter finished with Pembroke attacking but a succession of P/C’s came to nothing and the score was 2-1, all scored by Pembroke.

Kelly takes control

A final and robust quarter commenced with a challenge between the Ards Captain, Janice Vaughan and Karen Hales. The consequences were 5 and 10 minutes respectively in the “sin Bin”. A further misdemeanour in the 64th minute by Eimear Hogan who had earlier received a green card meant a “yellow” and 5 minute in the “bin”. These temporary dismissals led to a disjointed quarter with little shape and cohesion in play by either team.

Pembroke probably just deserved their win and moving up the Pool A table with 10 points. Ards, “on the road” earning a bonus point through losing by only one goal.

They were two evenly matched teams but the difference was due to the willing and self less running up front by Jill Collins and the composure in defence of Anil Kotze, Sarah Clarke and Clara Chamberlayne.

On a cool, dry but gloomy afternoon in Dublin 4 ‘Quins won the toss and elected to take the ball. Pembroke, playing towards the Railway End, immediately took the game to ‘Quins with constant attacking play and

sweeping movement across the pitch but were met by a tight defence with Reinout Mensink (GK) and John Hobbs to the fore. In the 10thminute a swift interchange of passes between Alan Sothern and Michael O’Connor saw the latter shoot wide. Pembroke were awarded their first Penalty Corner in the 12th minute and Alan Sothern’s effort was on target but well saved by Mensink. This was the first of many fine saves by the Dutch ‘keeper. In the 16th minute Craig Fulton as a good effort hit the post but finish over the endline. In the final seconds of the Quarter Brian Hayes Curtin received a green card and the Quarter ended 0-0.

The 2nd Quarter continued in a similar vein with Pembroke taking the game to ‘Quins. They were awarded their second PC in the 32nd minute and this attempt was again well saved by Mensink. Pembroke continued to probe for a way into the circle but a combination of strong discipline and poorly delivered final passes saw the half time whistle and a score remaining at 0-0.

The 3rd Quarter saw more of the same, Pembroke attacking and ‘Quins absorbing the pressure from all sides of the 22. A second Green Card in the 43rd minute to Rob Hobbs was followed almost immediately by the 3rd PC to Pembroke and once again a fine save by Mensink. A further save from play from Alan Sothern following a fine ball into the circle by Conor Harte was well saved. In the 52nd minute, also from a PC, saw Pembroke take a well earned lead with a strong drag flick by Alan Sothern. The score at the end of the Quarter was 1-0.

The 4th Quarter opened with a further Pembroke attack but ‘Quins themselves had to attack to try to get something from the game. However from one of their infrequent forays into the Pembroke 25 Mark Black, the former Irish International and still a strong midfield presence for ‘Quins, was yellow carded for not retreating following a free. The officials of Dan Clarke and Davy Stewart had kept firm control over the game awarding only two green and one yellow card. It was during his period of suspension Pembroke earned a 5th PC and although this was again well saved by Mensink Pembroke play was irrepressible at this stage and had the previously solid ‘Quins defence at sixes and sevens. In the 61st minute, from a long ball from Ken Tracy and helped into the circle, Justin Sheriff smashed an unstoppable shot past the ‘keeper for the second Pembroke goal. In the 63rd minute, from a narrow angle to the ‘keepers right, he took his second and Pembroke’s third to clinch a bonus point for Pembroke. In the 64th minute from more pressure ‘Quins conceded a final PC for “feet” and Sheriff saw his attempt for his “hat trick” hit the post with the ‘keeper beaten. However the ball was cleared and a fast and furious final Quarter saw Pembroke the deserved winners 3-0.

The Quins ‘keeper, Reinout Mensink had an outstanding game and his saves kept ‘Quins in a game in which they lacked possession, had no Penalty Corners and no goal scoring opportunities. However they cut down “free scoring” Pembroke’s clear cut chances, other than five penalty corners, until the final few minutes of this second game of a five game Pool.

5 December 2009 | Havelock Park | 19.00
Goals: Conor Harte, Alan Sothern

Pembroke opened the game strongly with Sothern prominent early as Pembroke probed at Bann defence capably marshalled by S McCandless who was to have an impressive game. Bann however replied to Pembroke’s early attack when Reay flashed a terrific ball across from the right but found no Bann forward available to convert. Pembroke won the first short corner of an evenly contested first quarter but Dowds blocked the drag flick. An incisive run from B McCandless resulted in Bann’s first short corner immediately followed by another after a breakdown. Boyce squandered Bann’s first real opportunity from open play when he uncharacteristically fluffed a clear shot.

As the second quarter resumed neither team could break the deadlock and the game ebbed and flowed with Pembroke in the ascendancy. Defences were dominant and there were few clear cut chances available to either side. S McCandless again proved to be the rock on which many Pembroke attacks foundered but unfortunately for Bann, Conor Harte converted a short corner after the hooter had sounded to end the first half.

Early in the second half a defensive error from Bann gave Alan Sothern the opportunity to extend Pembroke’s lead which he duly did beating Lennox low to his right in the 37th minute. Lennox again had to be alert to avoid further penetrative attacks from Pembroke and were given a life-line when McShane finished off a good move prompted by the persistent Boyce to reduce the deficit. Sustained Pembroke pressure saw a goal disallowed after it was initially awarded by umpire Clarke due to an infringement.

A tense final quarter saw a resurgent Bann almost level the score when a great ball by Brown almost found B McCandless who was unable to find a decisive touch. Pembroke continued to press with Fulton and McConnell prompting a slick forward line but again cool defending frustrated Pembroke’s best efforts. Persistent determination from Bann saw them denied an equaliser in the dying minutes when David Harte saved spectacularly from Smyth’s goal bound drag flick.

Bann finished strongly but on balance Pembroke probably just deserved their 3 points and Bann were unlucky not to salvage a draw after a hard fought and entertaining game.

05 December 2009 | Garryduff | 16.00
Goals: Shona Doyle, o.g

Pembroke Wanderers claimed a resolute two points in bizarre circumstances at Garryduff today, twice coming from behind to record a 2-2 draw with Cork Harlequins at Garryduff. Quins dominated for long periods and had enough chances to put the game beyond their Dublin visitors, but a never-say-die attitude and swift counter-attacking stood Pembroke in good stead.

Cliodhna Sargent gave Quins the lead from the penalty spot on 25 minutes, coming after her short corner strike had hit the post, and Karen Bateman’s goal-bound follow-up shot was inadvertently stopped on the line by Natalie Fulton’s leg.

But Pembroke were level six minutes later; a long ball came all the way through to Shona Doyle, whose shot seemed to be saved by Quins keeper Amy O’Neill, only for the ball to somehow squirm under her and roll agonisingly into the unguarded goal.

Quins re-took the lead on 41 minutes, when a flowing move involving Rachel McSharry and Yvonne O’Byrne saw Leslie-Ann Daunt pick out Emily O’Leary on the penalty spot with a super first-time cross from the right. O’Leary saw her effort come back off the post, put Bateman was on hand to fire on the rebound on her reverse.

But barely 60 seconds later, Pembroke were level again in the most unusual of circumstances. Sarah Clarke hit a hopeful crash ball from around 40m out, which seemed to be harmless until it took a deflection off a Quins player and into the goal. Despite the protests from the hosts, the strike stood under new IHL rules and was marked down as an own goal.

Both sides pressed for a winner as the game opened up spectacularly thereafter, but despite a couple of close calls at either end, the stalemate remained, allowing Pembroke to go home the happier of the sides.

21 November 2009 | Pembroke Wanderers | 17.00
Goals: Karen Hales (2), Alice Ward

The first quarter started under excellent lights and only sporadic rain at Serpentine Avenue with Pembroke attacking and winning a penalty corner in the 2nd minute. From this Karen Hales scored Pembroke’s first goal. The remainder of the 1st Quarter had little attacking play from either team although what attacks made by CI were orchestrated with strength and pace by Sinead Connery, the most influential outfield player in the game. These sporadic attacks were capably dealt with by a strong Pembroke defence in which Karen Kales was outstanding.

In the 2nd Quarter CI’s Claire Hickey hit the outside of the Pembroke post from play after 20 minutes but neither side gained any clear territorial advantage over the other. In fact CI had no penalty corners in the first two quarters and Pembroke only had one meaningful further foray into the CI circle when Hilda Maguire had a shot blocked by Orla McCarthy in the 2nd quarter

The 3rd Quarter saw more attacking play by both teams and it was no surprise when in the 42nd minute the ubiquitous Sinead Connery scored from play after an excellent build up. The CI team pressed again and were awarded their 1st and 2nd penalty corners in the 46th and 48th minutes. However the first resulted in a shot going wide and the second in ‘feet’ by a CI attacker.

The 4th Quarter saw CI awarded their third SC but again this was cleared by the resolute PW defence. After 58 minutes following a cross from the left which was deflected off a defenders stick the ball looped into the circle and was eventually pushed into the goal by a delighted Alice Ward to restore Pembroke goal advantage. Within a minute CI had again equalised following a penalty corner with an excellent shot by Melanie Ryan. This was in fact when CI had only 10 players as Sinead Connery was off the pitch for a green card offence.

There had been no problems for the Umpires until this Quarter and there was a further green card for Hilda Maguire of PW for not retreating from a free!

The game had opened up and in the 64rd minute Pembroke ware awarded only their second penalty corner of the match. It was time for their player of the match Karen Hales to step up and complete a crisp penalty corner routine by dispatching an accurate shot low to the ‘keepers left and just inside the post for their 3rd and, as it transpired, winning goal.

Further CI attacks were repelled by Pembroke and the game ended with CI pressing but unable to find their way through the suberbly marshalled Pembroke defence.

This was Pembroke Wanderers first win in the 2009/10 IHL having taken a point from their opening match at Ballymoney

Irish Hockey League. Late goals from Aoife Sherriff and Shona Doyle secure an excellent away draw to Ballymoney in this Pool A game.

17 October 2009 | Ballymoney | 13.00
Goals: Aoife Sherriff, Shona Doyle

Ballymoney opened their grounds to face Pembroke Wanderers in round one of their ESB Irish Hockey League game earlier today. The first quarter ensued with little or no incidents as both sides looked to find their footing and settle down, but it was Ballymoney who were the first to take control of the game something that they held onto for the lion’s share of the match. Their efforts were rewarded in the 26th minute when a weaving run down the left led to a great feed in of the ball across the face of the circle for Diane McNeill to deflect into the net for a one nil lead.

Ballymoney’s momentum began to build and they received their just rewards just a minute before half time when player coach Lyndsey McVicker flashed her magic and took a run from the half way line at great pace only to be met by the advancing Keeper resulting in a collision at the penalty spot, but excellent advantage from the Umpire enabled Laura Mullan to pick up the stray ball for an easy tap in and two nil lead at half time for Ballymoney.

After half time Ballymoney continued to make the majority of attacks but Jane Coyne in goals for the Dublin side was on fire and thwarted any of the Ulster sides’ goal scoring efforts. Pembroke used this opportunity to claw their way back into the game and were rewarded in the 59th minute when the Money keeper was penalised for stepping into a player who was backing her way into the circle resulting in Pembroke’s third penalty corner of the day. Third time was lucky for the Dublin side today as Aoife Sherriff slotted the ball home on the right post to bring her side within touching distance of a draw.

From the restart Pembroke took control and with determination secured themselves another penalty corner which was hammered home by a great strike from Shona Doyle. In the dying minutes of the game Ballymoney searched hard for the winner but the final whistle blew resulting in two points a piece for both sides.

Pembroke win 2-1 on shoot-out.

An action packed match from start to finish, Pembroke’s player-coach Craig Fulton netted the crucial, sudden death goal in the ensuing shoot-out before the game’s key player, David Harte, denied Glenanne’s Shane O’Donoghue’s effort and earned Pembroke the title with a 2-1 win.
Stu Loughrey had earlier broke that deadlock with a great strike, controlling Tim Lewis’ overhead in his stride to before battering low under the advancing Steven Doran. Glenanne didn’t take long to respond though, it only took them three minutes – another beautiful goal as Butler’s drive was redirected high into the net by Eddie O’Malley with the game only 10mins old.

Pembroke had David Harte’s sheer brilliance to be thankful for, Glenanne were left frustrated when several efforts were brilliantly denied by the Irish ‘keeper. Inevitably the new shoot-out format was called into play and Pembroke kept their nerve to take their 4th title of the year. An incredible year for Craig Fulton’s men.
