Over 45′s on the double!

Ireland Ladies over-45′s completed a remarkable double victory over their English counterparts at the weekend, with 1-0 and 2-1 results at Park Avenue. Pembroke players Sinéad Guilfoyle, Alison Pigot (captaining), Edwina Mulcahy and Jude Hayward were to the fore during both games, indeed Alison brought her all time tally against the English to an impressive 3, while Sinéad demonstrated her enduring class between the posts with two great performances, typified by a penalty stoke save on Saturday.

Sarah Williams was able to count on her years of man management experience as squad manager – with a group of demanding international athletes to look after, not an easy job by any stretch of the imagination! Naturally we’ll be expecting great things from our internationals this coming season, expect Alison to be wearing her irish gear down to training until at least November, while recruitment for next season’s Masters should begin in earnest in the next few weeks. Well done ladies, you worked hard for it over the summer – great achievement.

Early retirement? – not for this crew!

The Irish Women’s Masters (over 40s) played their first tournament last weekend, taking part in the Masters Home Countries International Hockey Championships in Swansea, Wales.
Pembroke Wanderers were well represented – and why not – having taken the Leinster Vets league in style a couple of months back! Alison Pigot rounded up an excellent squad in preparation and after some good sessions (training or otherwise) the squad headed over to sunny Wales.

The weekend was always going to be difficult with this new Irish team facing settled and experienced Scottish and English teams in particular. As the English, Welsh and Scottish teams were also fielding Over 45s teams their Over 40s teams comprised players aged 40-44, so the Irish team (fielding players across the 40s decade +) felt the early pace.

Pembroke players included Alison Pigot, Edwina Mulcahy, Bernie Barry, Sinead Guilfoyle and Aisling Schutte. All performed fantastically well in very warm conditions, and wore the Irish shirt with pride! Sinead Guilfoyle – standout performer in the Ladies section last season was joint Irish player of the tournament, no surprise to those who have played with her in the past, while Aish (she) Schutte(‘s she scores) terrorised defences in only ways that she can. As for Alison, she scored a memorable goal against England and we know we’ll never hear the end of it Well done to you all for representing Ireland, a great achievement.

Ladies Vets scoop league title

The 2009/2010 Ladies Pembroke Vets team won the league without losing a game all season (and only one draw) – surely the best record of any team in the Club this season???
They were presented with a beautiful Waterford Crystal Vase after the Vets tournament on Friday 7th May in Grange Road. The league games are played every two weeks mainly in Serpentine Ave on Friday nights, with a few away games.

There is a panel of 30/35 players to draw from but occasional it is difficult to field a team due to family commitments but approximately 22 players were involved for this season. There was a good nucleus of players who made themselves available for every match.

Playing in this league is great fun and very sociable so if there are any of you out there (35 or over) would you please let us know.
