New Membership information

Welcome to Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club

The primary mission of the PWHC is to create an environment where opportunities for excellence exist, healthy competitiveness is encouraged, friendships are forged and a sense of fun and enthusiasm for the game of hockey is fostered. The following steps are a good way to ease the transition from being the new kid on the block to becoming an old-timer.

Step One: Getting Started

Becoming a member of any new club can be intimidating. Talk to any long time member and they may say it takes a while to find your feet and become part of the group but be careful, you may find a new 'family'.

· Participate in as many events as possible, whether it be attending social events, volunteering your services for a club event, staying to socialize with team mates after your match, watching other teams play, or entering into courses presented within Pembroke; one thing is for sure you will start to see familiar faces and they will recognize you too. It is always a good opportunity to get to know people and build a core of friends. Longtime members agree that involvement is key to getting the most out of membership.

· Introduce yourself to as many people as possible as a new member anxious to learn the ropes – Pembroke members love talking about the club, story-telling is a favourite past time down in the Club, spend a few evenings in the bar and although the versions may vary you will definitely have an understanding of the clubs history.

· Please don't judge the club by a less than positive experience during one or two activities. PWHC is a large club with a very diverse membership base and the level of hockey and competitiveness is varied. Each team has a different leader, a different destination, different level of physical activity but at the end of the day everyone enjoys playing hockey, meeting new friends and catching up with old acquaintances.

Step Two: Get Connected

· Members automatically receive all correspondence by email. This will include information on socials, fixtures, cup games and other club events. There is a monthly newsletter that is also circulated by email but this is only as strong as the information that is supplied by the members so as soon as you into the swing of things please feel free to send on and any news or exciting info to spice up the newsletter. It is imperative that should your email address change please be so kind as to inform the office immediately as well as the club captains both telephonically and in writing. This is your responsibility, we aim to keep our database up to date and of course keep you in the loop with all our information.

· This website provides frequently updated information on fixtures, results, social events, coaching events, development within the club, volunteering opportunities, mentorship opportunities and information on the various sections. Of course there is also the photo element, which is always a laugh and the Hot News section of the Home Page.

· If you are simply not a fan of technology then be sure to check out the notice boards in Pembroke. There are various notice boards, one directly on your left hand side outside the office as you walk into the main entrance of the club and then there are other notice boards in the change-room entrance. These are updated with social information and club events. Other information like the newsletter can be posted out to you.

Step Three: Add variety to your membership PWHC provides

· Coaching : Are you interested in coaching or learning to coach? There are many opportunities that exist for members to improve their own coaching skills, get qualified and begin their coaching careers within the club. Alternatively there are many coaching positions within the club up for grabs, click on our coaching page for more information.

· Umpiring : Pembroke are trying to launch an umpiring ethos within the club as we all know, NO umpires = NO match. Leinster Umpires Union are going to be presenting a course towards the end of the month, early September and we urge you to please attend this. If you have been nervous of umpiring before it will help you clarify uncertainties, if you have wanted to umpire but not sure how to go about it this will guide your path, or simply help you to learn the rules so you develop a better understanding of the game when watching. With NEW RULES being introduced this season be sure to be ahead of the pack and gain as much knowledge as possible.

· Volunteering : Like any club Pembroke are always in search of volunteers, whether it be helping with a car park, working as a manger within the fillies and colts, helping with flags, banners and face painting for big club days, every job has its place and is as important as the next one. Please join our volunteer program and we will guide you in helping make the club a better place for us all. Also watch out for our “Volunteer of the month” in the Pembroke Newsletter.

· Mentorship Program : Do you feel you could add value to our youth, do you see yourself as a role model that could help bridge the gap between school and club hockey. The objective of our mentorship program is to provide role models and help a child develop socially and emotionally. To use our mentors to help our youth to learn to understand and communicate their feelings, to relate to their peers, and to develop relationships with other adults whilst growing personal confidence. To help our youth reach their performance goals and to enjoy being a loyal member of Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club. Click here to read more about our mentorship program.

· Social : Our social events bring the party atmosphere into Pembroke and always add a great fun value to the club. Hockey is a great stress reliever but having a superb clubhouse to enjoy a party sets the precedent for our great club nights. To get the season started Pembroke social committee are bringing back the Pembroke Ball. This is being held on Sat 14th November at the D4 Hotel, Berkeley Court.

· Sponsorship / Fundraising : Pembroke are always looking for leads so should you be able to contribute on a small or big scale or have a contact that we could follow up with please let Natalie Fulton know on nat.fulton@gmail.com. Dart line advertising now available!
